THE GULF OF CALIFORNIA ISLANDS

1ESPÍRITU SANTO ISLAND
Adventure’s Shelter

For their ecological and scientific relevance, the Gulf of California Islands are renowned by the international scientific community. They are considered one of the most ecologically intact island ecosystems in the world, including the few existing natural laboratories. For this reason, the United Nations for Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) decreed it a Natural World Heritage Site in July, 2005. This proclamation only goes further to protect the area as it has already been declared a Migratory Bird and Wild Fauna Refuge and Reserve Area, a Flora and Fauna Protection Area, and a Special Reserve in the international Man and the Biosphere Program promoted by UNESCO..

A cause of amazement for those who have had the privilege of discovering it, this island is coveted by experts and explorers of the unknown.  Espíritu Santo Island is undoubtedly the jewel of the Sea of Cortez. Swimming in the company of sea lions, discovering canyons, and kayaking under 300-meter (984-foot) cliffs within fascinating marine cavities are only some of the many activities that are offered.

Declared a Protected Natural Area (ANP), this whimsical natural formation shines with the beauty of its beaches.  These include Ballena Beach, located just across from the island by the same name, Candelero Bay, where a reserve of fresh water, a waterfall, wild fig trees and the spectacular hanging rock add to its attraction, Mesteño, where we recommend climbing along the northern part towards the large caves famous for their excellent acoustics, Punta Lupona, a magnificent place to camp, and San Gabriel Beach, where visitors will be able to observe traces of the economic prosperity experienced in the latter part of the nineteenth century.

1Finally, between Partida Island and Espíritu Santo, there are two sand bars.  The one located in the northeastern part has a stupendous campsite.  The tall rocky cliffs surrounding the area and the vast stretch of shallow water make for an amazing panoramic view.  Currently, the canal that divides the banks can only be crossed during high tide.

When hiring the services of a maritime operator, an experienced bilingual guide will teach visitors all about this natural treasure.
